Description
The Schweizerhof, Lucerne's most famous hotel, enjoys a prime location with views of the lake and mountains. The prestigious hotel complex, dating from 1845, was built during the heyday of Swiss tourism in the 19th century. The late-classical palace with its two annexes and row of palm trees in front of the portico has hosted countless famous guests throughout its eventful history, including Mark Twain, Queen Elizabeth II, Churchill and Neil Armstrong. Leo Tolstoy immortalised the Schweizerhof in his short story ‘Lucerne’. Today, the 5-star hotel is also a very popular venue for festivals, carnivals, panel discussions and other major events. The hotel has been owned by the Hauser family of Lucerne since 1861.
