Rachmaninoff's place of magic above the lake

Location

Zinnenstrasse

6353 Weggis

Description

Sergei Rachmaninoff, the composer, conductor, pianist, Hollywood star and family man created a place full of magic with his Villa Senar. On the peninsula of Hertenstein near Weggis in the canton of Lucerne, he found his second home and was able to compose again for the first time after a long break. The place inspired him and gave him and his family security.

He spent seven years (1933-1939) in his Bauhaus-style villa, composing works that have left their mark on musical history and represent his creative work. The villa is still furnished as it was then and also houses Rachmaninoff's grand piano. Today it is run by a foundation as a cultural venue and is owned by the Canton of Lucerne.
