Description

The world-renowned Einsiedeln Abbey is the most important Baroque building in Switzerland and the most visited place of pilgrimage in the country. Founded in 934, the Benedictine abbey is located on a plateau at over 800 meters. It traces its origins to St. Meinrad, who is said to have built a chapel on the site. The present monastery was built in three stages between 1674 and 1735, and the Chapel of Grace with the Black Madonna in particular is much visited. On the large monastery square, the "Einsiedeln World Theater" takes place  in front of the monumental monastery facade.
