Ritz and Escoffier made the hotel world famous

Description

The second oldest five-star hotel in Lucerne dates back to 1870. The luxury hotel became particularly well known during the period when it was managed by the famous Swiss hotel manager César Ritz (1878–1890). Its head chef at the time was the award-winning French chef Auguste Escoffier, who developed the modern organisation of hotel kitchens in Lucerne. Personalities from all over Europe came to the ‘National’, including guests such as Empress Sisi and the Shah of Persia. In 1920, a special conference on the Treaty of Versailles was held at the ‘National’. For a time, the hotel also served as a comfortable exile for abdicated kings.
